About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Sheldon, Good point and something graduates need to be able to do no matter the field they are entering. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeremiah, Good point about what it takes to be an effective thinker and problem solver. Many students want to jump on the first thing that comes into their mind rather than reserving judgment and doing more in-depth analysis. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Antonio, Good way to support your students while helping them grow in their knowledge and skills. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Thomas, Good way to get them involved and seeing the relevancy of the content while making application of the skills they are learning. This is a win win for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Thomas, So true and so important. The human side of teaching is just as important as is the technical side. We model so much for our students so they need to see our human side in the process of acquiring the technical content and skills. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Thomas, I am getting a lot of these students as well. It takes some special effort to help them see that they can be successful in class after being out so long. I provide them with the tips on how to study and note taking so they will have the confidence to stay in school and complete their program. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michelle, Good motivation strategy. I am a big fan of guest speakers and field trips for the reasons you list. Both get the students ramped up and help them to see the value of the course and how it fits into their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michelle, This is how I use the syllabus that my college uses. I have a handout that covers the grading rubric and other items such as due dates. I want to support your comments about the use of a grading rubric because it is such a valuable resource. A grading rubric reduces student confusion and questions plus when a question does come up I am able to go to the exact section where points were earned or lost. Saves a lot of time this way. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Georgianna, Thank you for this good explanation of the value of a well prepared syllabus. It benefits everyone when it is clear and concise for understanding and use of the students and faculty. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michelle, This in my opinion is a great way to teach because you are bringing the most current examples into the class. The students get to hear about what happened and how it was handled and this is a great way to motivate them to focus on their education and career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
