About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Brian, This is so important because as the learning leader and the representative of your career areas to are a model to and for your students. Helping them to see what is expected of them in their field will ease their transition into the work world. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Emeka, This is a great point and one that many of our students today miss. In our entitlement culture and instant society self discipline has taken a back seat for many students. Self discipline is a life long asset that yields big dividends whether it be in one's professional or personal life. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Helen, Thank you for sharing this example with us. In life we often have to work in areas that may not be our preference such as auditory instead of visual. By offering instruction in different venues you are helping your student to be able to acquire information via other preference areas. By using your own experience you can help your students to expand their learning preferences. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Helen, I would continue on the path that you are going. I wouldn't worry too much about cheating at this point because the students may be more interested in success that trying to find a way to cheat. Are there any other ways of evaluating the students? I have used different assessment formats when I have students that have test anxiety so they can use a style that is more comfortable for them. Say moving from objective to short answer or case study. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ginger, There is a saying that goes "to teach is to learn twice, once as a student and again as a teacher". This is so true and should be a guiding factor in your professional development. By sharing this with your students you are showing them that they will not be done with learning once they complete their program. Sometimes they forget that to be successful they will have to be life long learners. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, Stories from the experiences of instructors are great motivators and examples of how to do or not to do things. You are sharing your life with your students in a way that shows application and relevancy in relation to what you are teaching them about fashion design. Keep up the good work you are doing because it is working well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, Like the commercial for Snickers! I think this is a great example for instructors to consider especially based upon the staggered time frame in which you may teach. This schedule is tough for anyone so being able to stay on top of your game while having a sense of humor is the sign of a dedicated educator. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stacy, We need to bring our A game to class each time it meets. Your comments are right on target in terms of how we must be the learning leaders and maintain consistency for our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ginger, Thanks for making this point because I know it will be helpful to other instructors. Your experiences are as fresh because they often will have happened in the day of the class. Also as a practicing attorney you are able to share with your students the ways law as changed or is being practiced in relation to the content that is being studied. I think this greatly increases the value of your course to students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joseph, I thought 4 until 10 was tough. Can't imagine going until 11. I have always taught in this time frame so I am used to the students that enroll, primarily adults that are seeking career upgrades or changing careers so they are dedicated to being successful and how to keep the class flowing. Thanks for sharing your experiences on how you are working with your evening students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
