About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Mariah, This reduces the frustration and anxiety of students and makes teaching a lot easier. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brian, You make a good point with your second sentence because this is the ROI for them. They need to see the value of why they are being taught what they are and how that knowledge and the skills will help them to enter the career of their choice. This is what will keep them in the course and feeling confident in their abilities. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michelle, This is a great way to "sell" a gen ed course. Students need to realize the value of what you are teaching them and how good communication skills, both written and oral will enhance their career development. You are helping them to acquire skills that will help them to be life long learners just as you mention. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mariah, Well said! One of my issues with students and helping them to "brand" themselves as future employees. With casual being what it is today getting them to dress professionally is a big challenge. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brian, This is a good way to get students settled into the course and feeling comfortable with their classmates as well as yourself. They feel accepted and you are showing them that you respect them and are working to earn their respect. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brian, Good example of the value of a well prepared syllabus in relation to how it impacts the educational and learning process just like the WPS impacts the welding process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mariah, The more you can do this the easier the transition is going to be for your students because they will have learned and worked in a setting that is reflective of their future workstations. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Michelle, Planning saves a lot of frustration and anxiety on the part of instructors. I have colleagues that rush into the copy room at the last minute to run handouts while trying to scan their notes for the upcoming lecture. Then they rush into the classroom just as the class is to begin. These are the same colleagues that complain that they can't seem to earn the respect of their students or gain their attention. Others of us have tried to nicely explain why but they don't listen or respond. The result is unhappy people all the way around. Gary… >>>

Mariah, I like openings like this. They let the students get settled in, learn something new and have a bit of fun before the class moves forward. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michelle, Students like change of pace and variety in instruction. Your comments are right on about how you are offering both to keep your students engaged. Keep up the good effort your students appreciate it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
