About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Tenisha, Good strategy for getting your students to think in different ways and develop different solutions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tenisha, Like your definition. It includes a number of different ways in which the problem solver can approach a situation and come up with a solution. This is such a valuable knowledge to have as it will serve them well in many different settings. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tenisha, Yes, it does and it is critical in the developmental process. They need to be able to reason through situations and then select viable solutions to the problem. This skill set will be very valuable once they are in the work place. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tenisha, Your comments reflect one of the rewards of teaching. You mention that you love it when your students start to think for themselves and raise questions that you yourself would raise in proposing a solution to the existing problem. This is one of my rewards as well. It is so much fun to see students mature in this area of their education. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stephen, Right you are. This is common sense but many instructors seem to miss this point and do not come to the first class prepared and ready to make a positive first impression. Then they spend the rest of the course trying to over come the negative impression they made with the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
DeSharn, Good strategy to follow as you will be able to customize your instructional delivery to meet the current group of students. This will increase their engagement as well as motivation in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Curtis, When you align the course content with real world experiences you increase the value of the course for the students as they begin to see the relevancy and application of what is being taught. This is the ROI that students should be seeking. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Curtis, The instructor is the learning leader so he or she needs to be able to serve in a number of roles to facilitate learning on the part of the students. You make a good point about the need to serve as a facilitator and coach. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Curtis, This is so important if you are going to get the course started off with everyone on the same page. Clear goals and objectives reduce frustration and anxiety and helps to focus the students on the course content. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jacqueline, I use a lot of case studies to help my students in developing their problem solving skills. Your approach helps the students to experience situations they will encounter in their workplace and the more prepared they are the easier their transition will be to employment. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
