About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Katelyn, Way to look at starting a new course. Think about ways to make a good impression and then have fun with the first meeting through an ice breaker and the introductions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Abigail, Life facts like you mention are very important to know about students. A simple comment about something like a baseball game can do a lot to earn student respect and start the development of rapport. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Abigail, I like the fact you have them sign off they have received and been through the syllabus. This puts the responsibility on them as college students. A well prepared syllabus is so valuable in the establishing of understanding about how the course is going to operate and what the expectations are. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Akuoma, I think this type of education and experience is critical for students. The more they can get exposure to the setting in which they will be working the easier their transition is going to be when they graduate. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katelyn, Good for you. The presence of such equipment is a motivator alone. I know when I walk into a lab I am always excited by what I see even if it isn't in my field. Adding the course content that enables the students to use the equipment and you have a win win situation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Abigail, I think this is a great service for students. You are modeling and helping your students to acquire the needed career skills that will help them during their job search. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stephen, So true. It can play a major role in the engagement and focus of students if it is a distraction. This is why we need to walk through and look at the environment through the eyes of our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Donald, So glad to hear this from an instructor that is so new in his teaching career. I wish you continued teaching success and many rewards from helping to shape the lives of your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Akuoma, I use guest speakers in my classes for the same reasons as you do. I think they really help with motivation when they explain how the course work benefits them in their profession. Our modeling of the behavior, dress and language of our profession is a must because we are helping to set the standard for our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Connie, We need to bring our A game to class each time it meets, no matter what is happening outside of class. This shows the students the model the will need to follow when they are out in the work world. You make a number of very good points about this in your comments. Thank you for your input on this.
