About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Akuoma, I like using small groups to work through case studies and do presentations. The interaction among the group members as well as their contributions help to keep the class moving forward. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joanne, As I am there as well with my evening classes I appreciate your comments about how to keep your students engaged. In my evening classes (4-10 pm) I change the flow of the class frequently as well as the delivery so my students don't get to nod off and mentally leave the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stephen, By keeping your awareness up you will be able to quickly see how the students respond to certain types of lectures and activities. This will help you in your instructional planning. The same will hold true in the lab setting as you will see important certain types of demonstrations are and when they should be given. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristia, You are "getting a read" on your students through this effort. I think this is a great thing to do because I know with my students once I get a read I can then finalize how I am going to open class for that day. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Timberly, Right you are. You are the learning leader so you need to set the stage for the students so they will be excited about coming to class and look forward to the information that is being shared and skills that will be developed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stephen, You are with these stories showing relevancy and application of the content. Also, you are giving them a mental picture of what their future might be like through the stories and examples. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Timberly, I think all of the items are good ways to get students engaged in the class and excited about their future career opportunities. The more examples and stories from the field that can be shared the more focused they will be on being successful. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Akuoma, So important because students have a tendency to "forget" deadlines and projects at times throughout the course. The more reinforcement of those deadlines you can make the greater adherence there will be to those requirements. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stephen, This is a good idea because this way everyone has heard and repeated the expectations. Students have a real ability to "forget" deadlines and expectations. So the more you can instill in their minds the course requirements the better. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristia, This is so important because you need to connect the course content to their career success as much as you can. This is how you generate excitement about your course as well as show them the relevancy of the information being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
