About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Joe, A great list of ways to prepare for and include students in getting a new course off to a good start. All of these elements contribute to student engagement and success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tammy, I think we all have been there at different times during our teaching career. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marc, This is a great way to check for understanding and get the students ramped up for the next class to come. Also, helps them to see where they need to shore up their knowledge or develop additional skills as they move forward in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marc, We need to keep in mind that adults are just taller children. They like to recognized and celebrated when they have done something successfully in the course. My students love to earn candy by answering questions during review time. In fact they get very competitive since they want to earn that piece of candy so they can show everyone they have learned the answer to that question. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sharon, You use a key word in your comments that really focuses on student success and that is empathy. Thank you for these comments in relation to the development of rapport with students. When an instructor has the respect of students and has developed rapport with them the stage is set for an exciting and enjoyable course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marc, This is such an important part of the teaching process. We need to recognize and reinforce students as they progress through our courses. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sharon, Passion for one''s field and enthusiasm for teaching about it are two essential elements needed for student success. Enthusiasm is catching and it is fun to see students start to realize what they are learning and how it is going to impact their future career success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marc, I use group work a lot in my classes as well. The sharing and interaction helps them to expand their abilities to work with others to reach common goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sharon, This is such an important discussion to have with your students. If they can figure out how to develop and use a support system the odds of them completing their coursework are going to increase greatly. They need to see that they are not alone in this effort and that many folks are behind them and hoping for their success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marc, Students like variety and change of pace in their instruction. You are providing both with your approach and I know this keeps them engaged and focused for the duration of your course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
