About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Cathy, The more variety the better. You are right on with your comments about math being scary for most students. The more you can help them see the value and application of what you are teaching the better connected they will be to the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Steven, You are on the right track with your approach. By providing dynamic presentations that help students to see the value of what is being shared and how it impacts their future success you will increase moral and show relevance to the students. They need to see that they are getting an ROI from their effort as well as their tuition. When this is done you will have established a learning community for our students that will pay off for them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary, Like your style. This is what being an instructor of merit is about and you reflect such through these items. Keep up your effort because you are impacting the lives of your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, Your last sentence is a good way to approach the learning process as an instructor. I have been an instructor for many years and yet every time I teach a course I learn so much from my students and the knowledge and experiences they bring to the classroom. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Allison, This is a good way to help students to see the value of the evaluation process and how they benefit from it. Their discussion about their results helps them to see how you evaluated their work and then how they can grow from the evaluation process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, This is a good point in a way of doing reverse learning for students. I like your idea about early success in the course. I have found that early success reinforces the confidence of students and gets them engaged in the course and then from there they can expand their instructional base. Thank you for sharing this strategy with us. I know this information will be of value to other instructors, especially those just starting their teaching career. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, This is a great way to help students to get to know other students better plus they learn how to work with different personalities. This is training they need to have so they will be able to work with diverse personalities when they are in the workplace. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mariann, This is a very good point. They need to be able to visualize in their minds their success and creating that visualization is our job. The more we can help them in this the greater engagement we are going to get from out students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Andrea, I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I can relate to long instructional sessions. You are right on target with your strategy to break the instructional flow up and offer different ways to move the students from being passive to active learners. You are right that interactive experiences generate greater students interest. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary, By connecting the objectives to the lectures you are increasing the value the course content for the students. They can see how what they are being taught is going to help them move closer to their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
