About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Heather, Your second sentence is a powerful one that we instructors need to remember. We need to include every student in the learning process. Some will be easier than others but through effort we can get all of them to participate if they have any interest at all in the content being covered and the field in which they are preparing to enter. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Carol, I tell my students that I will extend them courtesy as fellow human beings as we get the course started. In addition, I will work to extend them respect while earning their respect. Once we respect each other we can work on developing rapport and then build from there in terms of a professional relationship as students and learning leader. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, I think this is a powerful message to send to your students. Many students do not see how course content can be applied in other settings. When they have this pointed out to them they get excited because they are learning something they can use in their personal lives. You would think that they would know this already but it seems to be missed by many students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, They are a good way to make connections with the field as you mention and they also give students an idea of what a professional in their field is like. They get to see and hear from someone that is doing what they want to do so and this increases their motivation levels significantly. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Edda, Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. The more this can be done the more engagement there is going to be. Sounds like you have both going in your instructional delivery and this is how you will get your students focused on being successful in the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, This is a critical time because it is the foundation upon which the course will be built in the coming weeks. You are right it needs to be a positive forward focused first meeting. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mario, Good way to get a course off to a comfortable and friendly start. This lets everyone get to know each other and to learn why each person is in the course. This is how the earning of respect begins and then rapport can be developed from there. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Edda, Good way to enable the students to have the most current information in a place (the syllabus) that they can refer to throughout the course. This way they will be informed and can't say they did not have the information shared with them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Therese, The more opportunities like this the better. This is what the education of your students should be about. You are helping them to see that with hard work they can be successful in their chosen field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, These videos are great ways to bring the field into class. Your students get to hear from these administrative leaders how they approach their work and what they are seeking in terms of well run healthcare settings. This I am sure gets your students excited as they start to see themselves in such a setting in the near future. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
