About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Robert, Like the way you "connect the dots" for your students. You are helping them to make real world applications early in their educational endeavors. This increases the ROI value and results in greater student engagement. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Walter, This is how you improve as an instructor because you have used different techniques and you have something from which to measure. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, Wish I had you as an instructor when I was taking English. This is such a foundational approach for getting students engaged and using their newly acquired English skills but with their own life experiences as the foundation. Thanks for sharing this approach with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lisa, This is a very strong motivator for students. The influence that these graduates have is very high and the results are that the students start to see themselves as these graduates are and that is what the goal should be for having them come to class. I use them in my classes and the motivation and enthusiasm of my students for several weeks after is great. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Denise, I use games as well. The students really work hard to earn a prize when they are playing Family Feud or Jeopardy. Keep in mind that adults are just taller children. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Antonio, This is not only teaching but also entertaining thus the term edutainment. This gets the attention of students and shows your passion for what you are teaching. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Lisa, Right you are and this is why it is so important to have a system for ongoing feedback from students. That way you can see how your students are interpreting what is being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Antonio, Good point and one that needs to be remembered each time we step into a classroom or lab. These adults need to see they are valued and respected for the life experiences they are bringing to the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Antonio, Well said because the learners are in need to early course success so they know they can be successful in the course while refreshing themselves on being students once again. I use guided notes a lot so these individuals can up with the class while they are learning or relearning how to take notes and pick out key concepts. Once they get settled into the course they start to see how they can use their life experiences to gain growth in the class and have the confidence needed to be a successful student. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, As you know students really perk up when stories from the field are shared. These stories serve to reinforce the value of the content being shared and this increases student motivation and engagement. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
