About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Don, Learning how to be neat and organized are two of the career skills that will over the years yield good results. As you say industry/business desires individuals that are able to project both of these attributes. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Don, Great way to show current students what they will be learning and doing by sharing the examples of previous work. This helps them to see what the standard is for the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Yes, they do. The more senses involved the greater the retention of the content as well as the development of skills. You are right on track with this approach. Keep up the good work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Don, I use case studies in my classes a lot for the reasons you list. They help to make the content real and give the students the opportunity to make applications of what they are learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kim, Great way to start off a new course. This is how respect is earned and rapport developed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
James, Said but often common story. One of the reasons many of us teach is that we get to learn and interact with students. We treasure the opportunities that we have to help move our students toward their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Well said. This is such an important part of the instructional process. The impact that instructors have on the lives of their students can only be measured over the years. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tom, The more you can show your students how they can take the content of your course and apply it to their personal lives outside of the classroom or lab the more value they start to associate with the course. They start to see relevance and application and this is when they see the reason why they are taking the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tom, By taking the semantic memory component and connecting it to some experience students have had (episodic) the retention factor goes way up. So the more connections and examples the greater the learning that occurs. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Pamela, This is a good point because the students need to see the value of the content being offered and how it impacts their lives. When they do as you have I'm sure experienced their motivation levels go way up. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
