About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Jennifer, Students like change and you are offering that with your approach. You are engaging the students in a subject area that may not be the highest on their list of courses but by making the content practical and fun you are helping them make educational progress. Gary
Hi Eric, Right you are about the need for variety in your instructional delivery. Students like change which in terms enables you to appeal to their different learning preferences. This makes it a win win for everyone. Gary
Hi Mario, Your last sentence says it all. We do have to know them so we can create a learning environment that supports and encourages their success. When we do that we then set the stage for the students to put forth the effort to achieve their career goals. This puts the "effort" issue on them. They have to make the effort or they will fail. Gary
Hi T.J., So true. We, instructors have to put on our game faces and be excited about what we are teaching. To do otherwise is to be less than professional and is discouraging to the students. Gary
Hi Todd, The three Es are good for everyone to think about as they prepare for and enter into the classroom. These 3 will assist enthusiasm and excitement which leads to increased student retention. Gary
Hi Susan, Thanks for sharing this with us. This is very good information for online instructors to have and use in their class approaches. Gary
Hi Nelson, Well said. This perspective is so important when it comes to keeping the students focused on the outcomes. You and they are comfortable with each other so you are all heading in the right direction. Gary
Discussion Comment
Hi Vivian, I know you are going to benefit from the 3X5 card feedback method. It has worked for me over the years because the feedback is accurate and candid. Gary
Hi Joslynn, This is a very important professional improvement strategy. By reflecting and noting what occurred within this lecture and these activities you know what to use again or what changes you need to make. It means that each time you teach the course it is different and improved from the previous one. Gary
Hi Amanda, One of the critical links in students success is the caring instructor. By knowing that a person in authority cares about student success and progress students realize they have a support system that will enable them to achieve their goals if they will put forth the effort. Gary
