About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Ellen, Good point about the need for students to internalize their learning and career growth. This way they can realize the progress they are making toward their career goals. Gary
Hi Lillian, Good point about how to encourage students to keep them engaged and focused on the learning components of the course. The more application and relevancy you can show the students the more return they will realize from their efforts. Gary
Hi Audrey, You are right on with your planning efforts. I think as a result of your efforts you are going to see increased student involvement and satisfaction with the course. Keep up the efforts you are undertaking. Gary
Hi Kevin, This is a great way to continue your instructional growth and expertise. Reflection is important of growth as you mention and is something more instructors need to make a part of their instructional growth. Gary
Hi Lillian, Good way to keep them engaged and focused on the course. This way they give their attention to you and the discussion. This will lead to a higher level of retention as well. Gary
Hi Rashidah, Good point about the need for repeating the objectives and expectations. Students have a tendency to forget or get distracted at times as the course progresses so reminders help to keep them on target. Gary
Hi Judith, I like the way you describe the approach to the first class meeting. The strong, gentle approach is critical for setting the stage for a successful course experience by students. Gary
Hi Victor, Right you are. What are some ways you show your students that you are the class leader and that the class is going to go well? Thanks for your input on this. Gary
Hi Paul, Good point about knowing your students and how they will react to your sharing stories about your work experience. It seems that ever so often I have a class that includes students like those you describe. I am like you in that I am not going to give them any reason to pick on me and my abilities from the beginning of the course. I have other classes where the students enjoy the stories I share about mistakes I have made. Together we have some laughs and move on with the course. Gary
Hi Paul, Right you are about the first impression. Students need to have confidence in their instructors and feel that they are in good hands concerning the upcoming course. The more instructors can instill confidence in their students the better the start to the course. Gary
