About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Sandy, Well put about getting students reengaged in the learning process. They do fall off the rails, get tired, have family issues, etc. that take them out of the course sequence. Having a personal and forthright talk with them as you mention generally brings them back into the course flow. Gary
Hi Christopher, This is so important as you are starting a new class. The more you know about your students the more information you have to plan your instructional delivery. Good point, thanks for sharing it. Gary
Hi Lee, You make a very good point and one that I support. Instructors need to work at "connecting the dots" for students and you are doing that with your methods. This really helps with student retention and comprehension. Gary
Hi Phyllis, Good thinking about how to expand your delivery in an online environment. It will be interesting to see how your students respond to the separate window idea and following along on tours, etc. I think this is very creative so I wish you much success with it. Gary
Hi Chanel, Good points about how to approach the culinary arts classroom. I support your efforts to establish a strong base (concrete) from which your students can operate. Once the concrete base is established then they can start working on the more abstract concepts that apply to their field. Gary
Hi Susan, Good professional development plan. These types of opportunities will give you new ideas you can incorporate into your instruction as well as give you contacts you can call upon should you have questions. Gary
Hi Stephanie, This is going to be a great experience for you. I am excited hearing about it. The content that you will gain is going to be great but your comment about the networking is a good one as well. You are going to have a group of professionals you can call upon as questions about teaching come up. Gary
Hi Dominga, Good way to get interaction going by your students plus helping them to get settled into the course. By getting to share something about themselves they see that they are being valued as human beings rather than just paying students. Gary
Hi Sherri, I like your diverse approach to instructional delivery. Thanks for sharing the strategy about using certificates as rewards. Students really like these as they are evidence beyond grades that they are doing a good job. Gary
Hi Sherri, Good way to inform your students plus by asking them what they expect out of the course you are showing them that you respect their input. This creates a great opportunity for the development of rapport with the students as the course progresses. Gary
