About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Glenn, This part of their education is very important. If they can't handle pressure or meet deadlines no matter how skillful they are they aren't going to enjoy the success they want to have. This helps them get ready for the real world just as you mentioned. Gary
Hi Joyce, You make a key point about the need for skills beyond just those that would be considered technical. The social mediator/cooperator skills needs to be developed as well if the students are going to be successful in their careers. Gary
Hi Amy, You sure do want them to have that impression. This is why you need to bring your A game to the class and let the students know you respect them and that you are going to help them be successful if they will put forth the effort. Gary
Hi Linda, All great teaching strategies. Thanks for sharing them with us. The reporting out after working together as a group is always a highlight for students. They get to see how other react to the solutions they have come up with and that reinforces their learning. Gary
Hi Tammara, So true. This type of interaction leads to greater student investment in the learning process. They have to see the ROI for their time and money and being part of the learning process helps them to see that. Gary
Hi Tammara, This is a great way to demonstrate student responsibility. This shows them what they have to do and with many students coming to class with an "entitlement" attitude this keeps success focused on their efforts. Gary
Hi Linda, Good analogy to use with the students. This way they can get a graphic grasp about how the course is going to operate and what they need to do to be successful. Gary
Hi William, Good strategy. Sharing this information is so important for the students as they get settled into the class. They need to know the course requirements, expectations and how they can be successful if they put forth the effort. Gary
Hi Elizabeth, Student feedback is key for instructional improvement. By listening we can continue to expand our expertise as educators. Gary
Hi Jason, Thank you for these words about preparation and the advantages of being prepared. We all know it but need to be reminded of it now and then. Gary
