About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Justin, Good example. This is what customizing instruction is all about. You have your basic content and you develop appropriate supports to that content that will keep the students engaged in the learning process. Gary
Hi Yi, I agree with your assessment in terms of instructor preparation. If they work hard at preparation when the class starts the content will flow and the students will learn. Gary
Hi Paul, Students really like these real life examples. It helps them to see the relevance and application of the content and they draw them in because they are interesting to listen to. Gary
Hi Justin, I think this is a good idea. I do the same thing. The handout is a one page pull it all together document that support the syllabus. It is in bullet listing form so I can refer to each key point and reinforce it on the first day after we have gone through the syllabus. Gary
Hi Jumana, Good way to set the stage for the course. This way the students understand the course expectations and can plan their studies around those expectations. Gary
Hi Yi, Well said. You last sentence captures what can happen if you are well prepared and bring excitement to the classroom. Teaching is a lot of fun when you are organized and prepared. Gary
Hi Justin, You have a very good professional development plan. With these strategies you are going to be able to greatly expand your expertise and have greater command of your students' learning progress. Gary
Hi Betty, Good plan. I am sure you are going to have results with this approach and greater engagement from your students. Gary
Hi Paul, Good way to help get the students settled into the course. What are some ways you have the students introduce themselves in your course? Gary
Hi Angela, Good put about how to handle disruptions and use them as teaching tools. They will happen so we need to move beyond them and keep our student focused. Thanks for sharing with us. Gary
