About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Scott, So true. By providing the learning steps and supports that are needed for success the students will be able to clearly see how they can be successful in the course. The key then will be for them to put forth the effort. Gary
Hi Charlin, Good for you. Students as you know really like to hear examples and stories from their instructor's experiences. This helps to make the content they are studying real. Gary
Hi Krisy, Students have a very short memory so you do need to remind them frequently about the course objectives and assignments. By doing so you help to keep at the front of their memories why they are in school in the first place. Gary
Hi Penny, Good plan to help students get into study groups. These study groups can make a big difference in the lives of students. They become a form of support for them with a common theme, that being the course and the career field. Gary
Hi Vickie, Good advice for us all. We can observe and study other instructional styles but in the end we have to be who we are and what we bring to the classroom. Thanks for sharing this thought with us. Gary

Hi Valencia, Good point that all of us instructors need to remember. This is the first and only time they are going to experience this course so we need to bring our A game to the class. Among several things I do to keep my excitement level up is to introduce at least one new strategy, activity, assignment or format into my course each time I teach it. I get very excited about this new item since I'm not exactly sure how it will work out so I get to be creative when working through it. This is fun for… >>>

Hi Victoria, Two words need to be a part of all instructional planning--application and relevancy. Your efforts are showing these words to your students. Students as you know really like it when their instructors share real world experiences with them. Gary
Hi Andrea, Thanks for sharing this ice breaker with us. I know many of us are always on the look out for additional ice breakers we can use. This is a good one. Gary
Hi Craig, Well put. You are in many cases the connector between students leaving or completing school. By bringing excitement to the classroom you help them to see where their focus needs to be. Gary
Hi Christie, So true. A well prepared syllabus as you know reduces student frustration and increases the understanding of students about course expectations and requirements. Gary
