I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Deward, Good plan. This way the students will be focused on the key concepts within the course structure. Gary
Hi James, Good for you and your students. Your students have the opportunity to study with and learn from a person with extensive experience. This is a great way for them to see themselves in their careers once they have worked with you and you have shared your experiences. Gary
Hi Natalie, Right you are. Understanding the polices and requirements of the course helps to get the students settled in and ready for the up coming sessions. This also reduces their concerns about what the expectations are since they have been clearly explained. Gary

After teaching the same set of courses for a number of sessions an instructor can become bored with both the content and the dlelivery methods.  This is the time to stop and think about introducing something new to the class format.  Look at your lesson plans and select one topic that you are going to try a new method with.  If you have always lectured over the content think about how you might deliver the content differently.  Would it work to have the students make presentations, would learning groups, case studies, etc. provide the same learning opportunities?  Select the method… >>>

Hi Thomas, These may seem like little things but they really are very big in the growth of the students. They get to see what a professional should be like. Gary
Hi April, Key point and thanks for making it. We need to look at ourselves and think about how students see us. Are we being the professional models we need to be to reflect the high standards of our field? The answer has to be "yes" for the sake of the students. Gary
Hi Roger, Good points about being a good role model. You may be the first person that the students have know on a consistent basis that has worked in the field that they are preparing to enter. You are the standard they are using to measure how they should conduct themselves. It is a big responsibility and one that we need to always keep in our minds. Gary
Hi Jane, Good comments about being a good role model. We are going to be a model for our students one way or another so we had better make it a positive one. This will help the class go better, earn the respect of our students and move them closer to realizing that this is the career area for them. Gary
Hi Vivian, Way to show that you are a dedicated professional educator that cares about her students. Your students will respect this and focus their attention on what you want them to accomplish as a result. Gary
Hi Trina, The short quiz over the syllabus is something that a lot of instructor do. This puts the students inside of the syllabus so they will be knowledgeable of its contents. This sets the stage for a successful course. Gary
