About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Erika, I agree with your statements on simulating the work place as much as possible. This makes the transition from the classroom/lab to the work world much easier. Gary
Hi Nicole, I like your soft humorous way to bringing the opportunity to learn into your classroom. This really helps your students to feel comfortable and willing to participate in discussions and answer questions. Gary
Hi Earnest, I agree with your statements in relation to the value of support systems. They help make student successful more likely to be achieved. Gary
Hi Jennifer, Good strategies for helping students to create support systems. With these systems in place the students will have a higher retention rate as well as satisfaction with their learning opportunities. Gary
Hi Heather, This is the same format that I teach in. I follow the same general structure as do you because if you don't change the pace and offer variety the students will be lost. Also, since the class meets from 4 until 10 pm they are tired from work and ready to just collapse in their seats, which in my class is not an option. Gary
Hi Earnest, Well said. Respect and rapport are two essential ingredients for teaching success. Students like to feel respected and then extend respect so everyone gets settled into the class setting. Gary
Hi Sherry, Good way to involve the students in the learning process. Their being able to relate personal experiences helps to create a connection for them between the content and their current educational setting. Gary
Hi Sherry, These activities are critical in maintaining student engagement. Good way to help the students see how their careers can be developed. Gary
Hi William, Well said about the need to refocus and determine what the really important things are in life. We all need to do this so we can keep our perspective on life and our careers. Gary
Hi Sherry, This is the "human" part of being an instructor as you say. This sets the stage for a good relationship with the students and their understanding that you understand where they are coming from, since you are a former student yourself. Many times I think that they forget that we, instructors are human beings with our own live issues. Gary
