About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Afshan, Good strategy for instructors to follow. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Bobbi, Students like stories as you know because they help to illustrate the content they are learning. In addition, it gives them an idea of what they will encounter when they are in their career areas. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Christine, It sure does and in addition it sets the tone for the classes that are to come. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dorothy, I agree. We need to all retain a bit of childishness throughout our lives. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dorothy, I like this method myself. By observing others I can see how I can expand my own expertise in the area of instructional delivery. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

Jessica, This method keeps the risk of failure very low and the rewards for effort and success high. This is the advantage of being in a classroom setting. The students have access to an expert in the field and get to use the expertise of that individual as they work through the learning process. This is the only time in their careers this will be true. Once they graduate the they are expected to have success always, even when they make mistakes. So the more experience we can provide them the greater their knowledge base and skill sets are going… >>>

Gwendolyn, I think this is a great way to get all of the students involved in the learning process. The more we have them share the more they see themselves as a part of the total learning process. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ardiana, Good point. Mini-lectures require careful planning in order to keep the content flowing and the class progressing. The activities between the mini-lectures reinforce the content that has just been shared and helps the students to remember the critical concepts that are needed in the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Elizabeth, I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I know what you are talking about when it comes to the students wearing down. If we don't change the pace and flow of content delivery we will lose them completely. This is why teaching in the evening is so much fun because I am always looking for ways to get the students engaged and focused on what we are doing and a result we get to do some really creative things in class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Edwin, Both of these methods is good for showing the students where the class is going that day. They need to see where they are going and then at the end of the day review the objectives so they know where they have been. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
