About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Amy, You are doing a great job of introducing different channels of learning to your students. With these methods the different learning preferences of the students are being targeted which will increase both engagement and focus. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Danny, So true and a concept that needs to be reinforced each time we start a new class. We have to make sure that the first impression sells the course to the students and helps them get settled into learning format. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Elizabeth, I like your approach to instructional planning. I use this same method as I do my instructional planning. By introducing a new method, strategy, concept or content I keep my interest up in the course because I'm never sure how the new item will play out for the students. This keeps my interest and helps me to continually improve the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Melonie, Good outline of the challenges that face instructors. We have only so much time to get through the material so we have to make sure we are making the learning opportunities worthwhile for our students. This means pulling out the critical content from the good to know material and getting that information across. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Bobbi, I agree about being prepared. It sure makes the class go better and it is a win win for everyone. Can't imagine how instructors do it when they just walk in a try to "wing it". That is too stressful! Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marcus, Good for you. This type of confidence will help you to move the learning of your students forward. How do you handle questions from students for which you don't know the answer. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dennis, Good strategies for students to use to keep their interest in the topics and facilitate growth in their knowledge of the field. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

Role playing can be a valuable teaching resource for you to use with your students because are going to need to know how to fulfill the role of the career professional they are training to be.  Also, role playing enables students to develop their communication skills as they demonstrate, describe, or portray a person in the field.

Set up a situation where the students work through a problem or use their critical thinking skills to resolve a challenge.  The more they role play the more comfortable they will be when they are in the real setting.  Role playing will give… >>>

Dana, Yes, you do and that I think is one of the great things about being an instructor. We get to use our creativity to meet the needs of our students and help them achieve their career goals. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Chad, Good point because the students need to understand what the goals are and why they have been set like they are. This way they can see value to what they are being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
