About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Diane, As I am a logical sequential learner myself I understand those students that like flow charts to show them how they progress from one point to another. Many learners of this type need to see how the parts fit together in order to be able to see the big picture. Good point, thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Glenda, I use them a lot in my classes for the reasons you mention. They get order to the collection and then use of the new content that has been shared. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Glenda, You make a good point about adult learners needing to see the ROI of what is being taught. They want to be able to connect the content with their career goals. If they can't they are going to step away from the learning process. We need to work to get their "buyin". Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Araceli, Good observation. They are see a connection between the content and their lives. This gets them excited because they are starting to see the value of what is being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ramon, I like the way you are approaching the value aspect of learning the technical components of the field. By helping them associate each word with application you are giving them the gift of understanding and connection. You are right on with your comment about them being able to understand the need for learning such concepts once they see the ROI of them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Keelan, Right you are. This is a way to target your instruction to ensure that the students are receiving the content they are going to need to be successful in their career area. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Shellie, Good planning and great way to put the course together for the students. They get to see how the will benefit from acquiring the content while being given the steps that the course will progress through. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Danny, Yes, it is. Rapport and respect are two critical components related to student retention. We need to earn their respect while showing them respect and then develop rapport as the course progresses. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jessica, So true and so important. We, instructors need to "sell it" in terms of our passion for our field and sharing with students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michelle, Well said. At least the "horse" has an opportunity to take a drink because it has been provided by you the instructor if they so choose to participate. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
