About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Marcus, Good way to show that your students will have support from the very beginning of the course via electronic access. This I am sure helps them feel that they can settle into the course because you will be there to answer their questions. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

Julie, In your case since your students are working in a lab setting you can strive to make the temperature comfortable but you can also remind the students that is cooler because that is how labs operate. By making it cooler you are setting the temp at the same level they are going to be working in the real world. If they cannot adjust to that temp then they may not be able to work in a lab and they need to select another career area. The point is you are using an industrial/career standard for setting the temp. Gary… >>>

Bonnie, I teach a 6 hour course so I understand and appreciate your comments about needing to have back up plans. They say always have a plan B, but I have found that it doesn't take much of to have you working on Plan E or F and sometimes L, meaning you can go pretty deep in plans pretty quickly. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
George, I teach a required course for certification so I can appreciate your comments. I work hard to convince my students that there is value in what I am teaching to their professional development. It is fun to see them come around as the course progresses. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Bobbe, So true about the students wanting to know what is expected of them. By them knowing the course requirements, expectations and policies their frustrations and concerns are greatly diminished. They then can concentrate on getting through the course successfully. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Bobbe, Great job of long range planning with built in flexibility. This way the students know where the course is going and know you have an organizational plan to achieve the goals you have set for them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, This modeling of professional behavior and character is so important for the students to observe. You are practicing what you are advocating when you talk with them through your actions. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gilbert, Good way to continue to expand your knowledge and expertise as an educator. Your professional development will enhance the learning of your students every time you teach a course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ariane, They key is to offer variety in your instructional delivery and you will be hitting on many of the different intelligences so your students will enjoy success as they internalize what you have shared. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tena, You have given us instructors a lot of good information about how to encourage, support and motivate our students. All of these efforts contribute to their progress and the end result as you mention, GRADUATION! That is what it is all about and it is great to be a part of making it happen. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
