Dr. Norris,

Good morning. I don't believe enrollment will become totally automated in our industry because it would take away from the value of customer service. If our industry does not understand the key component of exceptional customer service and the buy in of first impression truly matters - we have lost before we ever take on compliance and the other areas that bear down on for profit and career colleges.

Financial Services (FP) on the other hand I believe is headed in that direction. I feel this way about FP because basically a simple function in everyday life with the same dollar value… >>>

My goal is to become an online instructor - I am currently working toward earning my bachelors degree in HRM Spring 2013. Is there anything else that I can do in the meantime while working toward my bachelors degree and continuing in my current postion as an online coordinator.

Student non-class related activities can be a big help in retaining students and contributing to a sense of connectivity to the campus and community. The challenge presented is finding faculty or instructors who are willing to be a part of this process. It is possible but NOT ALL campuses have full time staff that can commit to being involve in campus activities it really does require a collective effort from the campus faculty and staff. Every term is different so keeping the momentum is challenging.

I currently have an Associates Human Resources Management along with working two years as an above average Campus Online Coordinator. In this position I schedule, advise, provide critical support and resources for hybrid students, assist in the distrubution of textbooks and I am an alum at the school where I hold this position as well as I manage the office of Student Services. Any advise on what else is needed to become an online instructor? Thanks in Advance for your response.

Kevin, Follow up and follow up whatever the plan is it will require that you go an extra step and ask the student where they are with the plan. If you have other staff members or faculty onboard with the solution provided for the student team effort helps you as a dedicated faculty member realize that you have done what is required and followed up with the student to find out if they were committed to the plan initially. Is the plan written down or only discussed? How were you held accountable in the real world situation that you had?… >>>

I agree that it makes sense on paper, but what control does an admissions rep really (or ideally) have on student retention? Beyond enrolling students and now fulfilling the role of re-entry of students that is the extent I feel can be contributed by an admissions associate. The comparable job description for an admissions associate is sales and marketing - typically. Sometimes I think the answer may be in advising of students that can contribute to the outcome of our students and having the other student services in place to support the student, faculty and staff.

I have worked in admissions and now under the academic umbrella. It is a very difficult task for a career college to balance enrollment and for lack of better wording enroll a good student.  In the for profit sector of education we need admissions to enroll students with the intention of helping them make the best decisions regarding their education.
