I too have noticed that when the more experienced student knows what to expect, to have them explain and mentor the newer students is better for the retention of the other students. We as educators may not always envision what a student is feeling, or the anxiety involved in their attempts to master material we hope they gain through our teaching.

Often times when I have students in my classes or in clinic, and they tell me personal things, in the past I have often felt this is something I don't need to know about. Its hard to know when it is ok to step in and be a counselor, and when to sit back and say nothing at all. It seems to me that the older students (those in their 30's and 40's) are better capable of handling their personal issues then the younger students (late teens to twenty something). What are the Cornell notes?

I read that the instructors were the main stakeholders for ADL, but that students also have a stake in their educational content. Which is correct?

when you say hands on activities, would you elaborate of what types of activities? I am teaching adults, and some of my younger adults don't want to take the time to study. I have given activities to be done in class, but I feel I am loosing their interest completely

My students that I have now, want to be given answers and do not want assist in their learning. I get very frustrated as this challenges me to strive to find out what will work and what doesn't work. I already implement adaptive learning techniques, but what I did wrong this time was post their enrichment assignments early to be emailed to me when it was due. And what they did was go through the book and fill out the assignments before I had even gotten to the chapter to be discussed. Except for the midterm and final, all my… >>>

I have only been teaching for 3 1/2 years. As I first started out, I taught the lecture/student model. It now becomes apparent to me that lecture alone is not the most prolific way of getting across information. Working in groups, working with a partner, applying knowledge when appropriate for exams, and or hands on activities is more beneficial, and provides instant feedback to the student in hopes they are moving in the right direction. This also keeps the students interest as they move along in the program.

Discussion

What is the acronym, " LMS"?

MY favorite way to keep a class moving is by throwing some group activities to enhance learning for the other groups. This way they are teaching their class, and I act as the facilitator instead of just lecturing

I am wondering if the student/students are actually setting goals to take the time to study? Is the retention loss only on the school, how much does the responsiblity fall on the student?
