I have been teaching in the online environment for 7 or 8 years now and I have learned a great deal over that time. In some instances I have been out in front of change and in other instances I have unfortunately been behind it. I love what you are saying about using the student's name as you communicate with them. It is such a simple, yet effective way to help the student feel engaged and accepted. I love it!

This is such a great question because it is becoming such a common problem in the classroom. I am really torn on this subject. On one hand, our job is to make sure they understand the subject matter and it is possible for the student to show that comprehension even though the grammar is bad. On the other hand, we are also responsible for making sure they can present themselves in a manner that is clear and bad grammar and spelling doesn't really prepare them for the working world. This is a great question. We are dealing with this very subject at my office right now. We are struggling with how to engage with "Millenials." There is a such a difference in working with this group than there is with other generations. There is no question in my mind that research in this particular area would extremely helpful. I know some research has been done with regards to this generation in the workplace, but I would love to see some in the area of edcuation and in particular, online education.
