This section taught me about some clear steps I can take when addressing an issue with a student. Steps 1-8 will be helpful to have as a check off whenever I have to have these tough conversations.
The schools show of commitment to the wellbeing of the students means EVERYTHING to retention. I will remember this through every student interaction and do my best to promote this between instructors as well.
I learned that sometimes you can't find out a reason why a student is leaving school. This module mentioned that most times in an exit interview, the student will give the easiest answer to be over with the process. I completely understand that as the reasons may be extremely stressful and/or embarrassing.
I think I will have to show my students that I am there for them and their success. I want them to feel they can come to me about anything that is impacting their ability to learn or come to class.
Using a variety of content in online learning helps keep students interested and considers students who may learn differently.
I will incorporate all into my courses: text, audio, animation, graphics, video, artwork and photographs
Whether online or in person, when the student can apply the course material to real world settings- it increases the value of the content.
I will incorporate assignments that have students interacting with the real world and using their material as a guide.
It is important to create content that also allows the students to complete things at their own pace (asynchronous), as well as synchronous activities that keep the students on track and actively engaged.
I will keep this in mind as I try to create a variety of different assignments
Quality online course are characterized by:
Structural integrity Navigational Simplicity Active Learner-Centered Learning Intellectual Interaction
I plan to incorporate this by making sure my online lectures and platform design follow this checklist
This is in the case where the batch of students seem to be intent on low participation. Has anyone experienced that and overcome it?
I honestly prefer more frequent shorter quizzes, but not too short that if the student misses 4 questions, they've failed. I've found that 15-20 questions is a good, sweet spot.
Students need to be motivated to continue to be inspired. Especially as the course is about halfway or almost over, the initial motivation can weaken. My goal will be to show enthusiasm and give praise.
