Adaptive learning will not replace the faculty/instructor but instead give helpful insights and allow for more one on one time with learners

It was interesting to see how instructors can begin to implement it small and grow it from there.  I think sometimes it seems like you need to spend the money and get the programs, but there are also ways to slowly build and implement it as well.

Students need to be motivated to learn.  Especially for the younger generation who have been growing up with technology, the struggle will be to capture their interest and get them motivated, so teaching styles they used to work in the past will not work well for these younger learners.

Adaptive learning can help all types of learners to be successful in mastering content.  It works best for content that is static such as math and science.  I think we use books in our nursing program that uses adaptive learning.  I have found that the students sometimes try to beat the system because they will continue to get more questions in their prepU if they aren’t answering correctly which then takes them more time.

This is not a one sized fits all. When implementing this style of teaching and learning, you need to be flexible and can start small and expand over time.

Pre-recorded lectures should be <10 minutes.  You need to be adaptable and know that many different things can be done to make flipped learning successful.

I think a barrier is getting the pre-recorded portions into more manageable and watchable videos.  I like the idea of using videos that are already out there that are engaging and cover the material and often times is broken down into smaller videos which can be ideal for students.

I think the idea of the flipped classroom is great.  I tried to pre-record lectures for our nursing students, but I found that they just were not taking the time to view the content which is frustrating, if the goal is to then have them apply what they should have done as homework prior. If you can get the buy in from students though, this would allow for more time in the classroom to allow for student engagement and activities which ultimately benefits them more for checking understanding of key concepts. I think it sometimes just takes time and also… >>>

Starting with low-risk activities can help incorporate more active learning. There are various barriers that will have an impact on active learning and I will have to keep these in mind as a new instructor.

There are so many ways critical thinking is used.  Trying to educate while using critical thinking and analytical thinking exercises especially in nursing is going to be so important in ensuring success of students.  With nursing being application based, a new nurse needs to graduate from their program with not only the basic knowledge, but how to utilize these critical and analytic thinking skills.
