Knowing that even experienced instructors will make mistakes.  Taking note of mistakes as they occur and how they were corrected and reviewing these mistakes to learn from them and improve.

Learning how to deal with the different types of students was helpful.  I am not a confrontational person to begin with and so having clear strategies to use is helpful in preparing to teach my first course.

I think in this day and age where so many lectures are presented via PowerPoint and students often follow along on their laptops and iPads, I can see how there may be so many inattentive students.  The idea of self reflection is important to ensure that I am presenting material in an informative but engaging way and also getting feedback from these students on what can help them become more engaged would be helpful.

The discussion of course requirements and expectations is critical on the first day and within the syllabus.  Students need to know how to meet course requirements and expectations which can help them be successful in your course.

Online courses have added to the protection of FERPA and it’s important to be aware how this can have an impact on student records and privacy and how to stay compliant.

If an employee is also a student at the same school, they should follow the same protocols for accessing their educational record and not allowed to access it outside of following the normal procedure to maintain the integrity of the student record.

Being aware of who is allowed access to a student education record is key.  Each disclosure of a students record must be appropriately documented within the record. For post-secondary education, there are rules for if a parent has access to the education record.

Learning about who qualifies as a a school official.  As a faculty member, I wouldn’t have complete access to a students educational record and would only really need access to the information needed for the course I am teaching.

Consent is huge and I think its important to note that consent can be withdrawn at any time, prior consent does not mean that this instance was given consent, and the lack of fighting or saying no does not mean consent.

It’s nice to know that even off-campus sex-based harassment can be investigated, as appropriate.  I like when examples are given that can help us better understand these outliers, like the cyberstalking and how it was added to VAWA.
