Critical and analytical thinking exercises can keep the students engaged and participating in class while learning the information. 

 

The new instructor should be organized well before the class ever starts. Get everything ready ahead of time, be sure to double check all information for appropriateness and correctness and be ready to meet your students with a smile and confidence even if you don't feel it. 

 

The importance of discussion when trying to diffuse a situation with a student and trying to come up with solutions that will be acceptable to both the student and yourself.

 

 

Strategies for helping the more shy students become more active in class were things like group projects, asking questions for them to answer, asking them how you can make the subject matter more interesting to them, etc.

 

 

Create a syllabus that has key points highlighted in some way, e.g. Bold larger print, text in a box, etc. This will make it easier for the student to find and understand.

 

In todays electronic world, it is easy to see where FERPA will be important. Institutions not only have an obligation to protect FERPA realted student information, but it must also protect loss of that information to unapproved people such as hackers.  

 

FERPA defines what is public and restricted records, how they can be legally accessed and how to obtain them

 

Student information is available to others for specific reasons without the consent of the student. Vital information (race, SSN, etc) is not and needs a consent from the Student (or parent) to release this information. 

 

FERPA allows a student to view their records within 45 days of request and allows them the opportunity to contest anything in the document that he/she believes is inaccurate. 

There is still a stigmata on rape vicitms, especially women as to who was responsible for it occurring. How they were dressed, how they acted, if they had been drinking, if drugs were invovled (voluntary or not), etc. This makes women, especially young women reluctant to come forward to file complaints. There is also the psychological aspect to the act. Did she know them, what did she do immediately afterward, was evidence preserved, etc and if not why did she not do so.
