I feel that an important part of retention is not just "selling" the program to the student, but informing the student what life in the area is like in regards to housing, jobs, transportation availablilty and cost of living while attending school. All too often, students arrive on campus ready to start school but are then hit with the reality of having to survive along with having to study and stay focused on school. I try to observe the students on a daily basis to watch to see if they are engaged, distracted or just taking up space.  I've found that sometimes just by inquiring of the student is alright is enough to make the student realize that I am taking apersonal interest in their education and well being.  When I loose a student, my first reaction it to look within to see if there was something I missed or could have done differently.  Ultimately, the student has the brunt of responsibility in his succes or failure, but observation and intervention early when a… >>>

I believe any contact with the student outside the classroom/school enviroment should be avoided.  Students must see the instructor as a educator not a friend.  Once that line is crossed and the student see's the instrcutor as a "friend" the student /teacher relationship has been compromised and the expectations of the student will change.
