Managing records is important to stay organized. Instructor's need to find a simple but effective record-keeping system. Email is the top method of communication from learners  so setting boundaries is important. Chat is another way to communicate one-on0one with a learner that may need counseling. There are different types of behaviors from learners and knowing how to manage them is important to an instructor. Another important aspect of teaching is conflict management. It is important to resolve any conflict before it escalates. Another important role for an instructor is to manage attrition. 

The focus is on asynchronous promoting discussions that do not happen at the same time vs synchronous discussions that occur in real time. The preferred method is asynchronous. Learning styles that influence student participation include collaborative, participant, and independent. Strategies to promote learner participation is driven by class size. Feedback should be timely, build confidence, appropriate tone.

Traditional classroom strategies that are similar to the online teaching environment include knowing how to influence, persuade, inspire, and energize student. Also, learning how to project your presence as an online instructor include initiating or leading synchronous discussions, oversee projects, participate in discussion, and answer students questions and providing constructive feedback. A method for projecting instructor authority include academic credentials, professional experience, and achievements  which can be shared with a brief biography. A quality online course has the characteristics of: structural integrity, navigational simplicity, intellectual interaction, and active learner-centered learning. A typical Course Management System (CMS) consists of a course and within the course module(s), within the module(s) lesson(s), and within the lesson(s) topics(s). Ones role as an online instructor to help ensure students accomplish the course's learning objectives by managing the learning environment (learning support) and each learner's learning experience (technical support).
