I find the older more "worldly" students offer more real life stories, and will help the younger students learn material. Some students are rather dubious of the instructor, and the institution's intentions, for profit and all, and an older more secure student can really help with the instructional gaols.

I teach in a post secondary trade school. We get all types of students here. Ex military to students righ out of public school. Some of these students question authority, and have never been held responsible for any of their actions for any part of their lives. They can be quite a handful, but can also become a great student when given the support and proper encouragement. Discipline in the classroom can be an ongoing challenge especially when you have to deal with the "gang" mentality. Sometimes a sacrificial lamb is needed to correct unruly behaviour.

I once heard someone say "a student is a student". This person was not from the east coast nor understood the New York, Philadelphia connection. These students have little understanding of ownership, policies, rules, boundaries and related limitations and can be a handful. NOW with that being said, if you know your audience's make up prior to teaching them, a tailored presentation can be developed and we actually can do some good. If you have no idea you are going to a casual event, and your tuxedo feels a bit tight, you might have wanted to do some preliminary research… >>>

I have noticed one huge trend among these youths; why?? Well, the standard answer was "because I said so!" WELL, that just explains everything...I am glad YOU said so!! If we just take the time to answer a closed ended question perhaps with a no, then say "and let me explain why I said no." This is just what Gen Yrs want. Give a reason for a descision, a task, a reading assignment...give them a relevant reason to do what you have asked them to do. This approach works so much better, draws a conclusion and everyone walks away happy… >>>

I think we can all agree this might be something we have said at 1 time or another.Learning how to handle the daily challenges we all face, can help us cope with life itself."I can only do so much, worry about so much or don't want to deal with it now", are sayings we us just to put things off. Is this really what we want to do? I guess the saying "procrastinate now" come to mind. Think about it, deal with what we can see, touch, manage and change in small steps. Changing the world one life at a… >>>

For a few people, taking a test can be a traumatic experiance. Some people don't take tests well but are very good with tactile tests. At our institute, we have tests that are already made up. We as instructors don't change them. I will however, proctor make-up tests at the convience of the student. Now there has to be some specific time frame agreed on and adhered to. If left go long enough, the student will loose the info and usually will do poorly on the test.

One must enjoy what they do. You must be passionate about the material, confident with the material, enjoy the work surroundings and the people they work with.Prepare for the class, be early, be ready with the material you will be needing on a daily basis. Don't continually leave the room for things you forgot. The students see you aren't ready for them and that can reflect how they percieve and react if you aren't ready and you really don't care about what you do or who you have infront of you. The student's can sence weaknesses in you and your… >>>

We must be a team here. As we all know, it just takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch. Those with negative feelings and thoughts can infect those who start to dwell on the negatives and this will affect their performance and others.

In the industry, all departments must be on the same page. If you aren't working together as one entitty, the smooth flow of information, morale and just doing business will suffer. Once people start becoming unhappy, it is very dificult to turn them and things around.

I have found that being friendly with the students, not friends, has helped me with the classroom control. Really caring about their education and trying to answer any and all questions they have helps build a good learning enviorment.
