Rubrics need to be fair for all students.

When creating a rubric do not add too many objectives.  Eight is a good number to have.

Holistic rubric is quick to score and a Analytic rubric allows for meaningful feedback and is easier to share.

The key to successful online education is good communication between the instructor and student.  The student should know early how to get in touch with the instructor and all communication should be respectful and professional.

There are many tools that a student can use like Wiki, blog, messaging and others that can help enhance their education.

Because you do not have a face to face relationship with your students online, it's important for them and the instructor to have good communication skills so that they can seek help if need be and be a stronger student.

This has reinforced what I have come to know that students need to be assessed to see if they are ready to take on an online course and then areas that they need help with should be instated.

Value assessments can measure a students growth compared to where they started.

Objective Assesments have a right or wrong answer where subjective assesments are more like essays that answer an open ended question.  Subjective assesments must have a rubric with it so that the student understands how they will be evaluated.

I have not used a diagnostic evaluation before that will assess where the student is before the course begins and also determine if the course is what the student anticipated.
