About me

Activity

There was a lot in this course to help one manage time and stress.  I think I sometimes get too caught up in what I am doing to remember to do some of the things I learned in this class, even those I already know help. Experience has taught me that I am not as effective a teacher if I forget to take care of myself.

I have to use prepared materials and tests whether I like them or not, and many of them are good at assessing what my students have learned in some aspects. Because I have to do things in ways I do not always think are good, it has become a challenge for me to overcome. I do that by adding to what I have to do with what I like to do. Even though it means more work, it helps my stress because I know that students are learning what they need, rather then what the main office thinks they need.

There was a lot of good material in this course - much of it was review because I have a lot of experience, but it is still useful to revisit Bloom, etc. occasionally.  I think the planning, syllabi, and lesson plans become easier as you gain experience.  If I am teaching the same class over again, I can usually use previous lesson plans by tweaking them a bit for the class I have at the time.  The material to be covered, etc., as well as the syllabi are supplied for us from the head office, so it is primarily lesson… >>>

There was a great deal of good information in this course - things I can use to help my students, particularly those who are returning to school after a long absence.  They often need help in techniques for taking notes, studying, and even test taking.  Using different approaches for different types of learners is very important.

Discussion Comment

I thought this class was really the best I have had so far.  There are so many students these days who seem to have a sense of entitlement - the "I paid my money" and " I come to class, so you should give me a good grade" attitude, that I find I need all the strategies I can find to try to make sure they learn something while they are with me; hopefully, that they find learning interesting, and have a sense of achievement when they leave.

Since I have been teaching in career college, I have had to change some of my expectations and methods.

I found this course to be very interesting in terms of things that I could use to teach in my present situation,

where most of the students are adults and have no patience with anything they consider irrelevant.  It is challenging, but I enjoy them.
