About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi John, Having a clear focus is important for students. Your comments about needing to be understandable are good because that is so true. The students should not have to spend time trying to figure out what is the goal of the lesson, rather they should be able to get right into topic and benefit from the content being shared. Gary
Hi Caitlin, I like rubrics because they give students a clear picture of points, values and flow. By using rubrics in your instructional methods you are helping to give them the big picture and reduce confusion about projects and course success. Gary
Hi James, Your experience is the value added part of your student's education. They get to learn different ways and methods from someone that has earned his living being competitive in his field. Gary
Hi Ginny, Great job of relating math to their field. As I understand it the primary reason for many restaurants going out of business is because the aren't managing their business. This is why math is critical to their future and you are giving them that message loud and clear. Gary
Hi Mary, You have outlined a comprehensive approach to meeting the needs of your students and as well as providing them with support. I am sure your students enjoy your efforts and are comfortable with your expectations and requirements. With your planning you are giving them the opportunity to be successful if they will put forth the effort. Gary
Hi Edward, The key is "reading" your students. This will help you to determine the kinds of support the students need based upon their backgrounds and experiences. This will help to keep them focused on the course and build their confidence. Gary
Discussion Comment
Hi Luciano, Great to hear. You are making a difference in the lives of students and sometimes with the pressures and stresses of the job it is easy to forget that. You have a good attitude about ramping up each day and giving it your best. Gary
Hi Kathryn, Great plan for professional development. I wish you much success in your new role as department head. By bringing the highest level of professionalism to your classroom you are going to be able model positive attributes for your instructors as well. This will help them to develop and bring a higher level of instructional delivery to their classrooms. Gary
Hi Pamela, Good plan. You have a clear grasp of how you want to deliver your content in an effective and efficient manner. You are offering a variety of ways for your students to be engaged in the learning process. Keep up the good work. Gary
Hi Moira, Good point. You have to insert your personality and style into your teaching. Using the other instructors as models and learning from them is great. Then you can translate what you know into "you" and you are going to do fine as an instructor. Gary
