I, too, have had that same complaint from several of my students. It seems that students gravitate more to the Asynchronous aspect for learning these days. I believe that they like the convenience of being able to participate at any given time within the timeframe of the course due dates.

The importance of student participation in asynchronous classes and the instructor's presence in asynchronous courses gives the students a sense of security and confidence while taking the class. 

I have learned that it is important for an instructor to make sure that they are well prepared to teach the course so that they can give  their students the confidence and comfort that they will have adequate support from their instructor.
