Technology-based Communication Tools

As you are developing communication with our students in the online environment, it’s important to think about various technology-based communication tools.  These tools typically fall into the following categories:

1) Small Group or One-to-One Meeting

2) Large Group Meeting and

3) Social Networking Sites

Never underestimate the need for small group or one-to-one software such as email, instant messaging, and the telephone to make connections with your students.  Large group meeting software such as Adobe Connect Professional, Elluminate, Wimba, etc. allow you to interact synchronously with students as a group or record your live sessions so students can view them at a later time.  Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are being used more by online instructors for discussions and announcements.

This does not provide an all-inclusive list, but rather examples of various technologies to assist in the communication process.  It is your responsibility to evaluate your needs and the needs of your students and choose the best technology-based communication tool for your needs.

What best practices can you share or other sites where faculty can go to learn more about how these various tools work?
