Students with Specific Needs

Just as with any class (whether F2F or online) there are students with specific needs. Encourage your students to provide specific information about those needs and tell them you will accommodate as best you can. There are circumstances where you may need to involve others to assist you in the accommodations.

However, there are some simple things you can do. For example, if you record your voice over PowerPoint or use another software package to do the same, provide the script for students to read as well. And, vice versa - if you provide a reading, there are some software packages that allow a student to paste the text and hear it. Therefore, if you have students with hearing impairments, they can read the text and if you have students with visual impairments, they can hear the text being read.

It is also important to give students opportunities to "present" information for assignments/projects in a manner that suits their strengths yet meets the learning objectives. For example, if students are required to debate an issue such as national health care and persuade others to believe what they believe (get them "on their side") then students should be allowed to persuade the audience in a manner that supports their strengths.

In this example, students may write a public announcement, record a commercial, develop a video using their cell phone, create a cartoon, etc. as long as the objectives of persuasion are met. Giving students choices in the delivery of assignments/projects helps provide for their specific needs.
