groupthink

At first i thought groupthink was a good thing but now I see the how it can stifle growth and creativity.

As for me and my house; "Group Think" is one of the more insidious phenomena in business today.  If I recall correctly (I do) it was diagnosed as the primary cause for the disaster of the Columbia flight according to NASA, resulting in the death of 7 innocent astronaughts.  "Group Think" <--- not on my watch!

Dr. Phelps, PhD, GA

Group think exists when a group is more concerned about consensus rather than doing what is ethical. This usually results in someone being harmed in the workplace. Sherron Watkins, the whistleblower in the Enron scandal is a perfect example (http:)//www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,194927,00.html. Sherron shared in a speech made at Small Business Day in Colorado that after the scandal she could not get a job in  Corporate America; so, doing speaking engagements and writing books was how she sustained herself. Fortunately, there are now laws that protect whistleblowers from employer retaliation (http://jobsearchtech.about.com/cs/labor_laws/a/whistle_blower_2.htm).

Wanda Cousar, EMBA

The "group think" advocator always seem to surround themselves with people who only agree with each other and the other point of view is never considered because it's never mentioned, or wanted. In business this can be disastrous if a plan of action is agreed upon and there is no escape plan or a "what if" scenario discussed. Crazy..
