Very important to create 'The Joy of learning" atmosphere in class. I always try to get everybody's names- they need to know each other and help each other.

With new students there is an opportunity of setting expectations and making sure they are in full understanding of the way the class will go from day 1.

I try to call each by  thier given name prior to nicknames. It helps them know i care and want to KNOW them.

Yes they certainly do need to feel connected right from the start.  It is very important to know your students by name and to interact with them when doing so.  I usually try to call upon my students and using the daily attend. until I memorize them.  I set a goal and try to know them by the end of the first week.
