I learned that student engagement must be intentionally designed and does not happen automatically. Engagement increases when students have opportunities to apply learning in real-life and hands-on ways, even in online settings. I plan to apply this by creating lessons with interactive activities, choice, and meaningful applications that actively involve students in their learning.
