This module gave me a clearer way to think about something I already do partly by feel: that PD works best when it's tied to specific skills and planned through individual goals, not just tracked by hours. It also reinforced that PD is more effective inside a PLC structure focused on student learning, rather than teachers working on their own in isolation.
The piece I'll use most is the IDP -- starting with an honest look at where each teacher is, then building goals that connect directly to the program-of-study elements. That way, the quarterly PD and curriculum cohorts I run are tied to documented growth plans, not just standalone activities.
I also want to take the mentoring I already do for industry hires and give it more structure. The module framed induction as support for new teachers and development for mentors at the same time, which feels like one of the more useful things I can invest in.
This is justification for what I am already doing, I currently have over 50 hours (only 6 are neccessary) of PD this year. In addition I also serve as a teacher mentor, PLC lead, and a DOE trainer for new occupational teachers.
I have learned that professional development is necessary for personal and professional growth. Teachers should seek opportunities to learn from others like peers, industry or employer partners, extern- and internships, college or online learning to name a few. This will help them to build their expertise on the subject matter and remain current and relevant in the marketplace.
