One of my biggest takeaways is having equipment and facilities that function is not the same thing as having a high-quality learning environment. It is important for us to determine if our spaces truly support the curriculum, reflect current industry practices, and provide students with real and meaningful hands-on learning experiences.
In my role supporting multiple CTE pathways across my district, I want to be more intentional about how we assess these environments. Ideally, using existing lab walkthroughs, teacher feedback, and industry partnerships to identify gaps and inform decisions about equipment, facilities, and instructional needs, and do so in both a proactive and program-centered way.
For me, the challenge is making this a consistent, manageable process rather than another standalone initiative. I want to build these considerations into the work we're already doing so that we're making informed decisions that genuinely improve student learning.
I learned that these components, facility, equipment, technology, and materials help benefit CTE students tremendously. These components allow the students to transition from the school lab to a similar real world work environment. I like to enforce a few more of the practices and procedures used in the real world of work!
