Building a retention program requires an engagement strategy that keeps students involved and connected with the university. Engaging students through alumni clubs, organizations, internships, peer mentorship, and academic advising not only fosters a sense of belonging but also motivates them to persist toward graduation.

I hope this opens up discussions about the resources available, the balance between reactive versus proactive services, and the long-term goals of student success.

To quote from the module: "First impressions are extremely powerful. The first impression of each meeting sets the tone for the entire session. It is important to send the message right away that you want to be helpful. Be sure to smile and express your interest in the student. Again, be non-judgmental and avoid sending signals that you won't listen."

I believe now that Understanding Attrition involves examining why students leave an institution before completing their program, and identifying patterns and contributing factors that may be preventable.

I believe that timely identification of 'at-risk students' and providing them with academic advising, tutoring, or wellness checks, can significantly improve retention outcomes.
