I learned that institutions must have written permission from the student in order to release information in the student's educational record. Institutions are also required to notify students about their rights under FERPA.

One thing that I learned was that there are no specific definitoins in FERPA for a school official or even for legitimate educational interest. I found this quite intriuging because it is actually up to the institution to specify the criteria for determining who is considered a school official or what is considered legitimate educational interest.

I have a better understanding of whether I can provide information to non-governmental organizations.

I discovered from this module how a situation is handled if a student wishes to view their record but has an academic hold.

From this module, I have gained a better understanding of what is considered legitimate educational interest as well as who is considered an official. I will apply this information by not automatically assuming that a faculty member or other instituiton employee should have access to a student's record.

From this course thus far, I have gained a better understanding of what FERPA is, what are considered the academic records of students and how a student get his or her record amended, if applicable. I also learned that a school is not required to maintain particular education records or education records that contain specific information.
