About me

I am a computer science teacher. Teaching is a second career for me and I have been teaching since 2003. Currently I teach three face to face coding courses and one distance learning asynchronous course.

Interests

gardening, cooking, and reading

Skills

coding, office documents, basic web design

Activity

Need to wrap the course in opening and ending communication.

It is important to encourage and establish communication between the instructor and the student and between students.

For most districts, Synchronous learning is more difficult because of equipment needs on both ends.

Asynchronous allows students to be anywhere with an Internet connection to participated in the course.

I need to evaluate some new tools in order to enhance the delivery of content.

The importance of creating an environment where our students feel safe and valued. One way to do this is through modeling what quality contributions to post look like and creating a rubric expectation for quality posts.

I realized that I need to set a time expectation for completing work. While I have based my weekly modules around about 45 minutes to an hour a day, I have not specifically communicated that expectations to students.

With high school students, it is very necessary to model what each type of communication should look like and to create opportunities for students to practice communicating. For example, if a student turns in an assignment late, they must email me and explain why the assignment is late. The email must have a subject, greeting, and closing. I give them feedback on the email.

I will consider more use of Zoom conferencing to allow more face to face interaction with students.

I already have a student evaluation form.  I want to implement a peer evaluation of my course.

I need to make more use of giving visual and audio feedback using one of the screen capture software platforms.
