There are many factors that can discourage students and make them want to drop out.  Being there for them, understanding their need to succeed, managing their behavior and making sure their success is YOUR NUMBER ONE priority is essential.  

Knowing when to use Asynchronous and Synchronous discussions is a great tool.  Again, some students need one on one learning and discussions with instructors.  Using Asynchronous discussions, I can get a true feeling for my students understanding of course content and if they may be having difficulty with said course content. 

The need for me to know my students personaly is crucial to their success in my course.  Getting to know them as a person and not just a computer is very important.  Talking with them on a one to one basis makes them feel that they are getting the most in my course and that I can always have an "open door policy" with each one of my students; whether they have a problem, concern or just need to voice their opinion. 

Comprehending the course content and course delivery format is crucial.  Familiarizing myself with the course delivery techniques and strategies will give me a better insite as to my students learning needs and to help them success in my course. I need to put myself in my students shoes!
