Through internalization, extrinsic motivation in the form of small rewards can help boost intrinsic motivation. However, Extrinsic motivation should not be overdone. Students should feel special for getting them and motivated. Not just like they are getting participation trophies.

Security and autonomy are both very important for a successful learning process, and require a delicate balance in instruction to be maintained by the teacher. We are not just an orator but a facilitator for motivation to learn based on these factors.

This reinforces that students learn in different ways. Therefore, one teaching method and tool is not sufficient. A variety of methods should be used for maximum learning potential.

The first day of class isn't just a matter of checking off things on a list or rushing through a lengthy course intro. Whilst the course does need to be gone over along with its requirements and expectations and your list does need to exist, it is also important to set a proper learning atmosphere.

One thing of importance is that an instructor must be familiar with a course and well prepared for it. This involves mental preparation, review of all course material, familiarity with campus services, and creation of a comprehensive syllabus.

This chapter reinforces the idea that teaching isn't just about the content or the words that come out of your mouth. It is how those words are spoken, how professionalism is modeled, and expectations are subconsciously and verbally set by the actions of the instructor as they not only display technical knowledge of their subject but also professionalism with their students and peers.
