Sometimes students do misbehave.  Some students come in late. Other students will bring a negative attitude to the class.  I think it is very important to address the issue as quickly as possible.  The student will hopefully recognize that this behavior is not tolerated.  The instructor should approach the student in a professional manner.     The instructor should set boundaries as well. Therefore, attention does promote retention.

Yes, indeed the attention we can show our students help with retention.  Students look forward in coming to school to learn, and be acknowledged. It is by acknowledging someone that we establish rapport and ultimitly the student will trust the instructor.

I have learned that we are models and mentors. We model with our lives.  We model professionalism with our behavior everyday.  How we dress, speak, and behave has a great influence on our students.  We are mentors as well.  We are there for our students.  We encourage them in times of difficulty. We do not make decisions for them, but we can guide them.  When I start lecture everyday I will greet them with a smile at the begining of class. I will continue dressing professional. I will continue speaking  to the students and never down to them.  I will be polite at… >>>

Attention.  What is attention? It is when we take the time to listen to someone else.  We take the time to see every individual with our eyes and look beyond that person. We look beyond their physical appearance.  We wonder about their lives. Each individual has a story to tell about themselves. We recognize  each individual is made up of mind, body, and soul. When a student approaches, a smile from the faculty will open up avenues of communication.  We express concern, availability, and ultimately attention.  This student will feel wanted, respected, and will want to stay in school.  l

Yes, Indeed our millennium generation does want  instant gratification.  I have observed in general of course , this generation does  not take responsibility  for their mistakes as other generations.  Nevertheless, it does help to become updated with techniology and to be open and not judgemental.

Retention is a problem or concern all schools encounter.  In our school we have a good marketing department.  I did observe the other day our admissions officer talk to a student and encouraged him to continue in school.  This student was sad because he was dropping two courses.   He did mention he was planning to return and finish.  We look forward in having these students come back. Thank You,  Veronica

The first impression means thousands of words. As an instructor it is very important to give a postive impression of self at the beginning of class or on line learning. This reflects professionalism, integrity, enthusiasm, and respect.
Is it important to respond to our students in a timely manner? Yes, definitely. Our students present their topic or answers to question and depend on the instructor to get a response. This demonstrates to the learner the instructor is interested, engaged in the learners success.
